With yet another week of fantastic, unseasonably warm weather predicted for all of California, what a great time to take a Bikeskills clinic. Here are some recent pictures starting with Jiro (above) sessioning a very techincal rock garden at Rockville Bike Park, near Sacramento California. For more pictures and information, read on
The Bikeskills team took its show on the road to look at more potential Bikeskills clinic locations. Our first stop was at the Rockville Bike Park, which is about 30 minutes north of SF, and, about the same distance southeast of Sacramento. While Rockville is a relatively small bike park, there are some excellent skill building opportunities there including: very challenging rock gardens, some short but sweet and steep drop ins, trail sections that require being in the right gear, having the right body position, and in some cases, giving it two – or even more – tries to make them in. All in all, Rockville is a great place to ride, especially if you either have strong technical skills, or are interested in developing them.
Drop right in. Jiro dropping in on one of the many short, rocky drop-ins at Rockville. One thing to keep in mind about drop-ins is that things can get bad, fast. They are the kind of terrain situation you do not want to simply “give it a shot.” Take a clinic before you tackle difficult, skills based obstacles and terrain where where things can happen very rapidly and or serious injuries can result.
Radical technical section. This trail section, with a steep climb, a strategically placed root and rock puzzle and an almost – almost – impossible turn at the end, had even Jiro working hard, and applying several skills to conquer.
Entering the garden. That rock garden again. It was long and really complex. And, it was a lot of fun. We watched many a crew give it a shot, but not a single one of them made it – and more than a few take tumbles… But Jiro was seven for seven on his attempts and for those lucky enough to take the time and watch him, they got to watch a free Bikeskills Sessions clinic!
The Session over (this shot taken at Rockville, atop one of the drop-in areas) and looking forward to another session at Rockville but thinking about our going The Distance Project. As much fun as we had at Rockville, we try and remember some of the more important projects we’re working on, like Going The Distance. So don’t forget to check in at our Going The Distance website (www.goingthedistance.info) to see what we’re doing on our documentary about raising awareness and funding for traumatic brain injuries (TBI) We’ve posted some new pictures from a round table event and skiing session. Next up will be interviews with a former road racing star who’s career was cut short by a serious TBI a couple of years ago. His is an amazing story, and an on-going comeback at that!
