While there’s really no contest going on between our SoCal and NorCal clinics, we thought it would be interesting to point out the differences between the clinics, SoCal instructor Joe Lawwill and NorCal’s Jiro Nakamura, the locations, etc. We’ll tell you what question will decide who’s clinic you take, as well give you another chance to win some great FREE stuff from Bikeskills in Bikeskills Contest #3. So on to the constrants and comparisons, aided by video, and information on how to win big… [Read more…]

Taming Rock Gardens with World Clampion, Brian Lopes, and Jiro Nakamura
World class technique can tame just about any rock garden. Taking a Bikeskills SESSIONS clinic that focuses on roots, rocks and ruts can help even the beginner feel comfortable en las rocas. Above, Jiro, flat out flying… make that skimming over, a Rockville Bike Park rock garden.
Rock Gardens are what to mountain biking what moguls are to skiing: fun if you have the skills, not so much if you don’t. A few weeks we noticed a long, long chain of forum entries in a popular cycling site discussing how to deal with rock gardens. Not surprisingly, several people wrote in telling people to “check out the Bikeskills video on rock gardens with Brian Lopes…” We thought with so much interest in this essential skill, we’d post the video and add a little more detail in that old fashioned method called “text.” So here you go…

Bikeskills Takes a Break This Past Week, But Skiskills Goes Off!
Skiskills’ Dr. Robb Gaffney MD is all smiles before an epic conditions Skiskills Squallywood ski clinic. After several weeks of relatively horrible conditions in Tahoe, mother nature came through and Robb delivered the skills for thrills while Jason Abraham captured the images and Duane Kubschista got it on video. For more images and the story… [Read more…]
Making of a New Seat and Bikeskills Contest #2
WTB’s Mark Slate fashioning a new seat out of… a block of wood… There are many ways (including clay molds/models, and stereolithogaphy) but the old fashioned way, whittling one out of a block of wood, has many advantages. However, the most important ingredient is not the wood or even splinter-proof shorts, but a craftsman… a rare and endangered species these days.
In addition to learning about how a new seat design is created, we’ve got another Bikeskills Contest for you! Our first contest was based on a “where is this?” (and won by Gary Souza of Pacifica). This contest is a “what is this?” and to win what it is, you’ll have to read on…

Help Us Go The Distance
Clockwise From Top Left: Inside a medical evacuation aircraft returning Bob Woodruff and others from Iraq. Bob Woodruff and Christina Vargas after Bob’s return to ABC. The Waller family welcomes Jay home after months of traumatic brain injury related hospitalization. Miles to go during the 2008 Lake Tahoe Crossing (the event raised funds for the Woodruff Foundation.)
With the economy in a tailspin, it’s no surprise that Epic Way Sports is having a difficult time securing funding to continuing research, filming, and production of our documentary on Traumatic Brain Injury, Going The Distance. But that is not stopping us! Over the past couple of months we have self-funded the project and have added three more advisors to our board as well as filmed three more compelling traumatic brain injury survivors. To keep moving forward, we have some ways that you can help yet doesn’t cost you a penny! [Read more…]
Special Weather Statement: Get Out and Ride!
Jiro leads an all-star epic ride. Jiro, Jon and Max Sigerman, and Nathaniel Knopf treked all the way from downtown Mill Valley to the mid-point of Rail Road Grade in a 1.2 mile ride that climbed over 200 feet of elevation. Famished, the crew stopped off at CiCi’s Organic Gelato shop to refuel.
From the sounds of things, there’s another series of storms headed to the west coast that will then head east. But in the meantime – as from now until this Saturday night – there’s some great riding to be had. It’s still a bit wet out there, which means to make sure and follow our Wet Riding Recommendations when you go.
